MARSHALL WATSON&COLE ODIN — Voyager

Marshall Watson&Cole Odin – Voyager The new 12-inch from LENG RECORDS (catalogue LENG070) arrives as a balearic-disco EP that channels the long-standing San Francisco link between the label and the 40 Thieves collective. Featuring a Bay Area partnership between Cole Odin and Marshall Watson, the record offers a concise three-track journey that blends low-slung dub disco with sun-bright Balearic synths, positioning it as a distinctive entry in the label’s recent output. Within the LENG catalogue, Voyager follows a series of releases slated for 2025-2026, including the forthcoming “Everything you’re about to hear is true (2x12”)” by Rotation Soundsystem (LENGLP022) and Marshall Watson’s own “Little Monster” (LENG079). Though the exact chronological order is not disclosed, Voyager sits among a wave of projects that continue the imprint’s focus on forward-thinking dance music rooted in the Bay Area scene. Side A opens with the “Original Mix”, a groove that builds from a steady pulse into a more blissed-out, saucer-eyed atmosphere. The track’s structure allows the listener to follow a gradual rise, with psychedelic guitar solos weaving through bright piano riffs and a weighty bass foundation, creating a dancefloor-ready yet immersive experience. The second cut on the side, “Extended Guitar Mix”, takes the same core groove and stretches it, foregrounding the languid guitar parts that defined the opener. This version adds a lightly tweaked arrangement, extending the rhythmic flow and concluding with an outro that feels particularly suited to late-night basement sessions, offering DJs a flexible tool for extending a set’s momentum. Flipping to side B, the “Cosmic Rave Mix” pays homage to San Francisco pioneer Patrick Cowley. Here the duo replaces the original bass guitar with a pulsating sequenced bassline, layering trance-inducing synths and locked-in electronic loops that drive the track toward a heightened state of consciousness. Midway through, a familiar piano refrain emerges, anchoring the cosmic journey while the surrounding synth textures push the energy toward a laser-filled climax, making it an ideal peak-time moment for a set that seeks a euphoric lift. Voyager marks a noteworthy collaboration for both artists, merging Odin’s affinity for dub-inflected disco and low-tempo cosmic house with Watson’s picturesque Balearic sensibility. The EP’s three tracks illustrate a shared vision that feels both rooted in the label’s Bay Area heritage and forward-looking in its synthesis of genre cues, situating it comfortably within contemporary underground dance music. For DJs, the record offers a clear progression: the “Original Mix” works as a warm-up or early-set groove, the “Extended Guitar Mix” provides a bridge for deeper, more hypnotic moments, and the “Cosmic Rave Mix” delivers a high-energy climax suitable for peak-time or late-night transitions. Collectors will appreciate the concise three-track format that captures a specific collaborative moment without filler, and the EP’s placement among LENG’s 2025-2026 releases underscores its relevance to the label’s evolving narrative. The release is pressed as a 12-inch vinyl, adhering to the format specifications provided by the label.
