About Release

Various Artists – Highlights Unex Pected – UNX002 12-inch Exclusive Vinyl Unex Pected returns with Highlights, its second release and a four-track Various Artists EP that brings together Pasha Philin, Osman Öz & Subminimal, and Aanghel & Lunarius. Released as a limited vinyl-only edition, UNX002 presents a compact selection of driving contemporary club music, moving between tech house, progressive house, deep grooves and breakbeat. The EP opens with Pasha Philin’s “Highlights (Kruglenko Remix)”. The remix provides a strong introduction to the record with a forward-moving rhythmic framework and a melodic, progressive sensibility. Rather than relying on excessive arrangement changes, the track develops through layered electronic textures and a persistent groove, giving it the kind of gradual momentum suited to longer DJ transitions. Osman Öz & Subminimal follow with “Nebula”, shifting the record towards a deeper and more atmospheric house direction. The track retains the compilation’s dancefloor focus while introducing a more spacious electronic character. Its position on the A-side creates a natural progression from the more driving opening cut into deeper territory. The B-side begins with Aanghel & Lunarius’ “Ascendent”, a progressive-leaning club track that continues the EP’s emphasis on movement and depth. The production sits between deep house and progressive house, using a steady rhythmic foundation and evolving electronic textures rather than an overtly maximal approach. Closing the record is “Night Vision”, also by Aanghel & Lunarius. It is the most explicitly breakbeat-oriented track on the release and provides the EP with its clearest rhythmic departure. The broken groove changes the physical feel of the record while maintaining the darker, atmospheric character established across the preceding tracks. MixCult itself describes the cut as the standout breakbeat track on the release and presents the EP as a combination of driving tech-house material, progressive elements and a breakbeat-focused closer. What makes Highlights work as a compilation is its clear sense of continuity. The four productions are not presented as unrelated selections; instead, they form a coherent progression from groove-driven house through deeper and more progressive territory before arriving at the broken rhythms of “Night Vision”. The result is a record designed primarily for DJs, with enough stylistic variation to remain interesting across a full set without losing its common rhythmic language. Highlights also reflects the direction of Unex Pected as a label. As a sublabel of MixCult Records, the imprint focuses on a more energetic and expressive side of the broader MixCult aesthetic, with an emphasis on dancefloor-oriented electronic music. UNX002 captures that approach in a concise four-track format: limited, vinyl-focused and built around movement rather than genre boundaries. For collectors of contemporary house, progressive and breakbeat-oriented vinyl, Various Artists – Highlights is a focused second chapter in the Unex Pected catalogue and a useful document of the label’s developing sound.
