GUSTAVO BASSANI, BACKENDORF — Backbass EP [label Sleeve]

Gustavo Bassani & Backendorf – BackBass EP [Label Sleeve] arrives on Planet Rhythm as catalogue PRRUKBLK170, a 12-inch vinyl that stakes a claim in the label’s forward-moving techno output. Issued on 20 November 2026, the record pairs Bassani’s seasoned production touch with Backendorf’s darker edge, delivering a compact yet potent five-track statement that feels both club-ready and introspective. Within Planet Rhythm’s 2026 roster, BackBass EP sits alongside two releases that share its release date: Kryss Hypnowave’s “Aremigu EP [Colored Vinyl]” (DRLDV006) and Mython’s “Hertsmere Road EP” (PRRUKBLK158). Earlier in the year the label offered “House Nation EP” (90GRVZ003), “Liminal EP” (DUBWARS020), “Roses & Revolt EP” (PRRUKBLK163) and “Zero Gravity EP Part 1” (PRRUKBLK166P1), while later offerings such as Doci’s “Constellations EP” (PRRUKBLK169) and Klint’s “Pigment EP” (PRRUKBLK141) will extend the same kinetic thread. BackBass EP therefore contributes to a period of heightened output, reinforcing Planet Rhythm’s reputation for crisp, kinetic techno. Side A opens with “Drop It”, a track that launches the set with a tight, propulsive groove, setting a tone of forward motion that the following cut, “Hold On”, mirrors while adding a slightly more restrained pulse, creating a subtle shift in tension. The B-side expands the narrative: “Movement” continues the kinetic drive, offering a rhythmic space that invites layering in a DJ set. “Raw Tension” tightens the atmosphere, its darker timbre acting as a bridge to the closing piece, “Unspoken Feelings”, which resolves the journey with a measured, emotive finish that lingers on the dancefloor. For Gustavo Bassani, BackBass EP follows the “Latin Hot Sauce EP” (PRRUKBLK128, 2025) and “Domme Sesh EP” (PRRUKBLK105, 2024), both also issued on Planet Rhythm. Those earlier outings showcased a blend of rhythmic precision and melodic flair; the current collaboration with Backendorf refines that approach, focusing more on stripped-back techno aesthetics while retaining the nuanced sense of movement that characterises Bassani’s catalogue. In the broader context of contemporary underground techno, the record exemplifies the current trend toward concise, groove-centric releases that balance hypnotic repetition with subtle shifts in energy. Its five-track format allows DJs to weave the EP into a set without overwhelming the flow, while the interplay between the two artists adds a layer of contrast that keeps the material fresh across multiple repetitions. From a DJ’s perspective, the EP offers a versatile toolkit: “Drop It” and “Movement” provide solid, driving foundations for peak-time moments; “Hold On” and “Raw Tension” serve as effective transition pieces, their restrained intensity perfect for building or releasing tension; “Unspoken Feelings” works well as a closing or mood-setting track, its measured pacing giving space for a set’s narrative to breathe. Collectors will appreciate the collaborative nature of the release and its placement within a prolific year for Planet Rhythm. The record is pressed as a 12-inch vinyl, matching the format of the label’s recent output and offering the tactile experience prized by vinyl enthusiasts.
