About Release
Bocal 5 – Musique Ilectronique opens the Dark Entries DE137 12-inch vinyl with a vivid snapshot of the French No Wave collective’s 1983 studio output. The compilation gathers nineteen tracks that span the group’s early cassette album, debut single and a rare tape-compilation contribution, all freshly remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Positioned at the intersection of electro, electronica and wave, the record offers a concise, kinetic take on quirky synthesized pop that feels both historic and immediately dance-floor ready.
Within Dark Entries’ catalogue, Musique Ilectronique arrives a decade before the label’s forthcoming 2026 releases such as Steve’s Out Of The Closet LP (DE-352) and Pure Motorised Instinct’s At Last I’m Leaving the Earth (DE-357). Its presence underscores the label’s commitment to unearthing archival material that bridges early experimental currents with contemporary electronic aesthetics.
Side A launches with “Cobra” and proceeds through “Folie D’ice”, “Gourmandise”, “Vampire”, “La Souris Verte”, “BB Coquin”, “Mr Pickett”, “Un Evenement” and “Tarzan Réglisse”. The opening track sets a brisk, synth-driven pulse that carries through the side, each cut maintaining a short, sharply structured form. The titles hint at a playful, tongue-in-cheek sensibility, and the succession of tracks creates a continuous, upbeat flow that encourages seamless mixing. The side’s closing piece, “Tarzan Réglisse”, caps the momentum while preserving the collection’s characteristic quick-tempo energy.
Side B picks up with “Moska” and continues through “Babouin Calin”, “La Bombe à Toto”, “Camion Solo”, “Faune Plum”, “Boule De Gomme”, “Bel Angelo”, “En Hop et en Air”, “Maud” and “Gogol Le Lézard”. These nine tracks sustain the record’s kinetic drive, offering slight variations in mood that keep the listener engaged without breaking the overall groove. The sequencing from “Moska” to “Gogol Le Lézard” provides a natural arc for DJs, allowing a set to build tension before releasing it into the final, more whimsical moments.
The compilation’s significance lies in its documentation of Bocal 5’s “minimum naive new wave” ethos, a blend of Satie-inspired minimalism, the raw edge of Suicide and the quirky charm of Young Marble Giants. By pulling together material previously confined to cassette and obscure tape compilations, the release fills a gap in the archival record of early-80s French electronic experimentation. Its remastering enhances the original analog textures while preserving the lo-fi immediacy that defines the group’s sound.
For DJs, Musique Ilectronique offers a toolbox of short, well-structured cuts that can be inserted into sets for quick bursts of retro-electro flair. The tracks’ brisk tempos and clear rhythmic foundations make them ideal for transition points or as surprise inserts that evoke a vintage yet fresh vibe. Collectors will appreciate the comprehensive nature of the compilation, the bright neon-green sleeve designed by Eloise Leigh, and the accompanying six-page xeroxed booklet that provides visual context through photos, artwork and press clippings.
The record is presented as a 12-inch vinyl, housing the full nineteen-track run in a single disc format. Its physical presentation, from the neon collage to the booklet, reinforces the DIY spirit that propelled Bocal 5’s original output.
