About Release

Barac returns to Storytellers with Memories Of Our Lives, a three-track 12-inch that captures the Romanian producer’s deeply introspective approach to underground electronic music. Released as STORY005, the record is a vinyl-only pressing mastered by Rob Small, with artwork by Mihai Gălbinișteanu. Across “Walk Safely Through The Maze Of Human Life”, “Don’t Sleep, Don’t Stop” and “Memories Of Our Lives”, Barac explores the space between minimal house, microhouse, electro and acid-inflected club music, favouring subtle movement, detailed rhythm and atmosphere over overtly dramatic arrangements. The release occupies a natural place within the Storytellers catalogue. Based in Bucharest, the label has built its identity around microhouse and closely related forms of minimal electronic music, with previous releases from artists including BRYZ, George Heerd and Mihai Pol. STORY005 continues that direction while giving Barac an entire three-track programme rather than treating his productions as isolated contributions to a compilation. “Walk Safely Through The Maze Of Human Life” opens the A-side with a title that immediately suggests the reflective character running through the record. Musically, Barac approaches the track through a restrained rhythmic framework, allowing small changes in percussion, texture and groove to carry the arrangement forward. The production does not depend on a conventional peak or obvious drop; its movement comes from the gradual interaction of individual elements within the groove. That sense of controlled development is central to Barac’s work. The track sits comfortably within the minimal and microhouse tradition, where small rhythmic shifts can have as much impact as large melodic changes. Percussion occupies a carefully defined space, while the underlying pulse remains steady enough for the track to function naturally in an extended DJ mix. The result is hypnotic without becoming static, with enough detail to reward close listening while retaining the understated character expected from a Storytellers release. A2, “Don’t Sleep, Don’t Stop”, maintains the same fundamental approach but introduces a slightly more insistent sense of movement. The groove becomes the principal focus, with rhythmic elements interacting through subtle variations rather than major structural changes. Its title reflects the track’s persistent quality: once the groove is established, Barac allows it to continue evolving almost imperceptibly. The track’s appeal lies in that balance between repetition and change. Rather than using repetition simply to maintain momentum, Barac turns it into a compositional tool, introducing small shifts that encourage the listener to concentrate on the details. The effect is particularly suited to long-form DJ sets, where a track can remain in the mix for several minutes while gradually altering the atmosphere around it. The B-side is reserved for the title track, “Memories Of Our Lives”, giving the record a single extended closing statement. Here Barac brings together the rhythmic precision of the A-side material with a more atmospheric and emotive character. The track retains the minimal discipline of the release, but the overall impression is more spacious, allowing the groove to sit within a wider electronic environment. “Memories Of Our Lives” works particularly well as the culmination of the EP because it gathers together the qualities introduced across the first two tracks. The rhythm remains understated and controlled, but the surrounding textures create a deeper sense of immersion. Instead of resolving the record through a dramatic climax, Barac lets it unfold patiently, reinforcing the idea of the release as an intimate and continuous journey. Storytellers describes the EP as a reflection on the underground clubbing experience and the connections shared through it. That sentiment is reflected in the music without requiring the tracks to become overtly sentimental. The emotional quality comes through the pacing, repetition and atmosphere: the way a familiar groove can create a shared sense of space between DJ and dancefloor, and how small changes within that groove can become meaningful over an extended period. The three-track format is particularly effective in this context. “Walk Safely Through The Maze Of Human Life” establishes the record’s rhythmic language, “Don’t Sleep, Don’t Stop” tightens the focus and increases the sense of persistence, while “Memories Of Our Lives” expands the atmosphere into a longer and more reflective conclusion. The sequencing gives the EP a clear internal logic without making the tracks feel overly programmed. There is also a strong physical identity to STORY005. Storytellers presents the release as vinyl only and on 180g vinyl, reinforcing the label’s commitment to the format and to the DJ culture surrounding its catalogue. The mastering was handled by Rob Small Mastering Ltd, while Mihai Gălbinișteanu provides the artwork, completing a release conceived as a complete physical object rather than simply a digital collection transferred to vinyl. Barac’s authorship is equally direct: the record was written and produced by Nicolae Barac, with no remixers or additional artists required to define its identity. That makes Memories Of Our Lives a concentrated portrait of his production style, allowing the three tracks to operate as different perspectives on the same musical language. For DJs and collectors, STORY005 offers a focused example of contemporary Romanian minimal and microhouse culture while reaching into adjacent electro and acid territory. It is music built for patience: grooves that develop through detail, percussion that rewards close attention and atmospheres that become more pronounced the longer they are allowed to unfold. Memories Of Our Lives is ultimately a deeply personal three-track statement from Barac and a fitting continuation of Storytellers’ vinyl catalogue. “Walk Safely Through The Maze Of Human Life” sets the path, “Don’t Sleep, Don’t Stop” keeps the movement alive, and the title track transforms that momentum into a spacious final chapter. Pressed as a vinyl-only 180g 12-inch, STORY005 is an understated but richly detailed record for selectors drawn to minimal house, microhouse, electro and hypnotic underground club music.
