WINDY, CARL — Portal LP 2x12"

Windy & Carl – PORTAL LP appears as a double-12-inch offering from Kranky Records (catalog KRANK255LP). The record arrives on the label’s roster of drone-laden, beat-driven techno, weaving ambient textures with a pop-inflected sensibility. Its release date of 31 October 2026 places it amid a wave of new Kranky entries that continue the label’s tradition of immersive, contemplative electronic music. Within Kranky’s 2026 output, PORTAL LP follows the earlier Tim Hecker releases “Ravedeath 1972 (LP 2x12”)” (KRANK154LP) and “AN IMAGINARY COUNTRY LP2x12” (KRANK130LP), as well as the collaborative “Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory LP” (KRANK250LP). It precedes Liz Harris’s “Music For Two Films About Water LP” (KRANK256LP). This positioning highlights the record as part of a continuum that balances the label’s early experimental opacity with newer, more melodic explorations. The opening side opens with “1: Preparation”, a piece that sets a spacious tone, inviting the listener into a calm, floating atmosphere. It flows directly into “2: Awhile (Reprise)”, which mirrors the opening’s ambience while subtly shifting the mood, creating a gentle progression. “3: Ode to Spaceman” expands the soundscape, adding a sense of weightlessness that dovetails with the subsequent “4: Firebursts”, a track that introduces a brighter, more kinetic pulse without breaking the overall serenity. “5: Sound Ignition” continues the forward motion, while “6: Approach/Descend” introduces a subtle tension that resolves into the contemplative “7: Exploration”. The side closes with “8: Departure”, a track that gently eases the listener toward the record’s second half, followed by “9: Glowing/Colorful” and “10: Gravitational Loft”, both of which deepen the tonal palette with shimmering textures. The final piece, “11: Through the Portal”, acts as a culmination, drawing together the record’s thematic threads into a cohesive exit. Windy’s earlier solo outing “Consciousness” (KRANK045, 2024) and the collaborative “Windy & Carl Meet Optigan Conservatory LP” (KRANK250LP, 2026) both explored similar terrain of drifting drones and melodic undercurrents, but PORTAL LP refines that language with a more pronounced techno beat framework. The duo’s interplay of willowy guitar arpeggios, foggy keyboards and chimes—described by the label as gentle and fresh—offers a nuanced evolution of their established sound. In the broader context of contemporary underground electronic music, this release underscores Kranky’s ongoing commitment to works that reward deep listening as much as dancefloor immersion. The blend of drone, beats, and ambient techno situates the record at the intersection of meditative listening and rhythmic propulsion, aligning it with current trends that favor immersive, genre-blurring experiences. For DJs, the record offers a suite of tracks that can be threaded into long-form sets, particularly in late-night or sunrise slots where a hypnotic, evolving groove is prized. The extended structures of “Firebursts”, “Approach/Descend” and “Through the Portal” provide ample room for mixing, while the more concise pieces like “Awhile (Reprise)” serve as effective bridges. Collectors will appreciate the double-LP format, which preserves the intended sequencing and sonic depth of the work. PORTAL LP is presented as a 2 × 12-inch vinyl release, adhering to the format specifications of the label. The pressing maintains the analog warmth expected from Kranky’s catalogue, allowing the intricate layers of guitar, keyboards and chimes to be fully realized on the record.
