KOEOSAEME — Makuhari (tape)

koeosaeme – Makuhari (TAPE) arrives on Edições CN as catalogue ECN54, a cassette release that immerses listeners in an ambient, experimental portrait of Tokyo’s reclaimed coastal district. The project stems from Ryu Yoshizawa’s long-standing practice of field recording and sound collage, now filtered through his Koeosaeme alias to render a synthetic impression of Kaihin-Makuhari’s futuristic landscape. The release follows Yoshizawa’s recent work on Orange Milk Records, yet turns its focus inward to a place intimately familiar: the planned city of Makuhari. While the label’s broader catalogue is not detailed here, the cassette situates itself within a lineage of experimental releases that prioritize texture and spatial awareness over conventional song structures. Side A opens with “35: 39'08.5\"N 140°01'55.8\"E”, a piece that evokes the initial step onto an elevated walkway, its ambience suggesting the thin veil between land and sea. The subsequent tracks—“35: 38'49.2\"N 140°02'18.0\"E”, “35: 38'56.6\"N 140°02'02.0\"E”, “35: 38'53.7\"N 140°02'28.9\"E”, “35: 38'39.5\"N 140°02'32.7\"E”, “35: 38'23.7\"N 140°02'03.4\"E”, “35: 38'10.9\"N 140°02'23.0\"E”, and “35: 38'25.5\"N 140°02'45.4\"E”, continue the journey, each coordinate-titled cut acting as a sonic waypoint. The titles themselves function as cartographic signposts, guiding the listener through shifting moods of anonymity, temporal dislocation and a lingering sense of emptiness. As the tape progresses, the sounds gradually recede, hinting at the district’s submerged origins and the imagined waves that once lapped its shores. Within Yoshizawa’s oeuvre, Makuhari (TAPE) marks a meditation on the gap between imagined urban futures and lived reality. By layering field recordings with custom-built audio systems and synthesizers, the artist extends his exploration of musique concrète and sound collage, a practice cultivated during his time with Office Intenzio and collaborations with figures such as Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto. For DJs and collectors attuned to deep-listening environments, the cassette offers a texture-rich backdrop suited to late-night sets, installations, or contemplative moments. Its ambient drift provides ample space for layering, while the experimental edge invites creative manipulation in modular or live-performance contexts. The physical cassette format further appeals to those who value tactile media and the lo-fi warmth it imparts to abstract soundscapes. The release is presented as a 12-track cassette, each side flowing without interruption, encouraging an uninterrupted auditory walk through Makuhari’s imagined topography. The format reinforces the work’s intent as a continuous meditation rather than a collection of discrete tracks. In sum, koeosaeme – Makuhari (TAPE) on Edições CN, catalogue ECN54, is a cassette-only ambient/experimental statement that translates a reclaimed coastal district into a series of coordinate-named sound vignettes, offering both a conceptual and sensory experience for listeners, DJs and collectors alike.
