About Release

EDITORIAL PRESS RELEASE Birds ov Paradise – Plateau Birds ov Paradise returns to Hypnus Records with Plateau, the third and final chapter of a trilogy that introduced David Sabel's deeply hypnotic sound to the Stockholm label. Originally released in 2018, the four-track EP has become one of the defining early entries in the Birds ov Paradise catalogue, combining deep techno, atmospheric electronics and psychedelic spatiality into a remarkably fluid listening experience. The HYPNUS020C edition brings Plateau back to vinyl as a 2026 repress. The EP opens with Jet, immediately establishing the slow-burning character that runs throughout Plateau. Its rhythmic foundation is deep and controlled, while atmospheric electronic layers gradually expand around the groove. Rather than pushing toward obvious peaks, the track develops through subtle shifts in density and texture, creating a sense of continuous movement within a deliberately restrained framework. Blossoms follows with a more immersive and organic quality. Hypnotic repetition remains central, but the surrounding sound design becomes increasingly spacious, allowing individual tones and rhythmic details to breathe. The track demonstrates the particular strength of Birds ov Paradise's production: deep techno that can remain functional while simultaneously creating the sensation of being transported somewhere far removed from the club environment. The B-side begins with Nightmare, bringing a darker edge to the record. The rhythmic architecture becomes more pronounced, while the surrounding textures create a denser and more mysterious atmosphere. The track maintains the hypnotic continuity of the A-side but introduces a stronger sense of tension, making it particularly effective within a deeper techno set. Wall of Bones closes the EP with another carefully balanced combination of rhythm and atmosphere. The track avoids unnecessary dramatic gestures, instead allowing repetition, tonal movement and space to generate its momentum. It feels less like a conventional finale than the final stage of the same journey that began with Jet. Plateau was part of Birds ov Paradise's three-part Hypnus debut, following Bayou and Savannah. The series was conceived as three separate EPs, with each chapter exploring the artist's flowing, deep techno language from a different perspective. Hypnus described the project as a journey into Birds ov Paradise's "dream world", emphasising the flowing rhythms at the centre of his sound. The project also marked an important point in David Sabel's development as Birds ov Paradise. Before the Hypnus trilogy, he had released material on Jens and Aniara Recordings and contributed to Hypnus's Memoir podcast series. His work subsequently expanded into a broader body of atmospheric and deep techno productions, including the 2022 Memorial album on Hypnus. Plateau remains particularly relevant for listeners interested in the deeper side of techno. The record sits comfortably between deep techno, hypnotic techno, atmospheric techno and dub-techno-adjacent territory, with the music relying on gradual development, spatial detail and repetition rather than conventional peak-time structures. Specialist retailers consistently classify the release across these overlapping forms. The physical edition is pressed on black 180-gram vinyl. Hypnus's own archive lists the original HYPNUS020C edition with a full-colour printed sleeve, while the current repress continues the record's return to the physical catalogue. For DJs, Plateau offers four carefully paced selections for deeper and more hypnotic sections of a set. For collectors, the EP represents an important chapter in the early Hypnus catalogue and the conclusion of Birds ov Paradise's original three-part introduction to the label. More than a straightforward reissue, the HYPNUS020C repress restores a distinctive piece of Hypnus's deep-techno catalogue to vinyl. Plateau remains a patient, atmospheric and immersive record whose strength lies in the relationship between rhythm, space and repetition. Written, produced and mixed by David Sabel Artwork: Henrik Jacobson Mastering: Mattias Fridell The official Hypnus Records Bandcamp archive confirms the original release date of December 22, 2018, the complete four-track sequence, David Sabel's production credits, Henrik Jacobson's artwork and Mattias Fridell's mastering. It also identifies HYPNUS020C as the original full-colour-sleeve 180g vinyl edition. Specialist retailers confirm that HYPNUS020C is being sold as a 2026 repress, with the same four-track vinyl programme. The current repress is consistently listed as a 12-inch edition.
