ARUBA, DARRAN NUGENT — Pieces Of My Mind EP

Aruba & Darran Nugent – Pieces Of My Mind EP opens a fresh chapter for the Sleight of Hand imprint, catalogued as SOH-03 and issued as an exclusive vinyl. The record revisits an early-noughties deep house classic originally issued in 2002 on the Irish label Blusoul, now re-imagined for contemporary decks. With a focus on deep house grooves and a vault-digging ethos, the EP offers a rare chance to spin a modern overhaul of a track that has long been a collector’s desire. Within the Sleight of Hand catalogue, Pieces Of My Mind EP follows the label’s earlier exclusive vinyl outings SOH-01 Soundz From My Stereo and SOH-02 How Low Can You Go?, both also collaborations between Aruba and Darran Nugent released in 2026. While the exact chronology remains unspecified, the trio of releases underscores a sustained partnership that explores the same deep house terrain, each entry expanding the label’s reputation for high-quality, vinyl-only productions. Side A begins with “Voices, Inside My Head (Re-Vision)”. Nugent’s re-recording retains the original’s hypnotic vocal fragment while reshaping the groove for a current club context, delivering a spacious, rolling rhythm that invites seamless mixing. The second cut, “Voices, Inside My Head (An Abacus Translation)”, sees Toronto deep house veteran Austin Bascom—credited as Abacus—rework the same vocal source into a late-night anthem. His signature approach, honed on Prescription, Guidance and Balance, adds a darker, more driving pulse that contrasts yet complements the opening track, giving DJs a flexible pair for building tension on the dancefloor. Flipping to side B, “When I Saw U (Extended Re-Vision)” offers a full-length reinterpretation of the beloved original. Nugent reconstructs the track’s melodic core, extending its atmospheric build and providing a deeper, more resonant bassline that works equally well in warm club rooms and intimate after-hours sessions. The final piece, “Piece Of Mind (Re-Envison)”, closes the EP with a fresh take on the title track, preserving its reflective mood while introducing subtle rhythmic variations that keep the groove moving forward without sacrificing the track’s introspective feel. The EP sits at an interesting point in Aruba’s recent output. After the 2026 releases Soundz From My Stereo (SOH-01) and How Low Can You Go? (SOH-02), both exclusive vinyl statements on Sleight of Hand, Pieces Of My Mind EP continues the duo’s exploration of deep house’s emotive side, now enriched by Nugent’s production and Bascom’s remixing perspective. This continuity highlights a commitment to revisiting and revitalising classic material, a practice that resonates with today’s vinyl-oriented collectors and DJs seeking both nostalgia and fresh energy. From a DJ’s viewpoint, the record provides two distinct versions of “Voices, Inside My Head” that can be layered or alternated to shift a set’s mood, while the extended B-side tracks supply longer structures ideal for mixing into peak-time moments or winding down a set with a more contemplative vibe. The vinyl format ensures a warm, analog feel that complements the deep house aesthetic, making the record a valuable addition to any crate that values both historic relevance and contemporary utility. The release arrives as an exclusive 12-inch vinyl, adhering to the label’s focus on analog-only offerings. Its straightforward packaging emphasizes the music without extra embellishments, aligning with the deep house community’s appreciation for substance over flash.
