About Release

Sir Spyro – 2ND SQ Sir Spyro returns to DEEP MEDi MUSIK with 2ND SQ, a four-track 12-inch that brings together grime pressure, heavyweight dubstep and the raw energy of UK bass. Released as MEDi145, the EP marks the artist's return to the label ten years after his influential Deep Medi release Topper Top and arrives as part of DEEP MEDi's 20th-anniversary year. The title track, 2ND SQ, immediately establishes the record's physical character. Stuttering hi-hats cut through a dense low-end foundation while an icy, industrial-sounding snare gives the production a hard-edged rhythmic centre. The track is built around pressure rather than melodic excess, with the bass carrying much of its weight and movement. Be Afraid takes a more stripped-back approach. Sparse production creates a large, desolate sense of space, allowing individual sounds to hit with greater impact. The combination of minimal arrangement, heavy bass and stark percussion gives the track an ominous quality suited to dark warehouse environments and bass-focused DJ sets. Diagonal pushes further into the darker side of the EP. Its looping construction and brooding atmosphere create a hypnotic effect, with repetition used as a source of tension rather than simply as a structural device. The track demonstrates Spyro's ability to work within dubstep's spacious framework while retaining the direct rhythmic instincts of grime. Patch Bae closes the record with a distinctly different character. Glitching electronic details and digital textures introduce a playful, almost arcade-like dimension, drawing on the aesthetic of 16-bit gaming while maintaining the EP's bass-heavy foundation. It provides a colourful contrast to the heavier and more austere tracks that precede it. Taken as a whole, 2ND SQ demonstrates Sir Spyro's command of dubstep's full spectrum. There are cavernous atmospheres, industrial drums, wobbling bass movement and clear grime references, but the production never becomes nostalgic. DJ Mag described the EP as a contemporary statement that retains Spyro's distinctive sonic identity while demonstrating his understanding of the genre's different rhythmic and bass-driven forms. The release also has a clear historical connection to DEEP MEDi. Spyro's Topper Top appeared on the label ten years earlier, while 2ND SQ arrives during the imprint's twentieth anniversary. Sir Spyro himself has highlighted the significance of returning to the label for its 20th anniversary after having released Topper Top during its tenth. For DJs, MEDi145 is a functional four-track record built around bass weight, rhythmic tension and strong contrasts in atmosphere. For collectors, the physical edition documents a significant return to one of dubstep's most influential labels. Across its four tracks, 2ND SQ demonstrates why Sir Spyro remains closely associated with the connection between grime, dubstep and the deeper UK bass continuum.
