SCARPER — E-funk / Twisty

Scarper – E-Funk / Twisty opens the HUMAN catalogue with a 12-inch vinyl that lands squarely in the intersection of breaks, beats house and garage. The Manchester-based label, known for its vinyl-only ethos, delivers a record that balances kinetic energy with a keen sense of clubcraft, and the two tracks on this debut showcase the producer’s knack for hybrid rhythms. While HUMAN’s roster is still emerging, the release follows Scarper’s own recent output, notably the Noctis EP on Plexus Records (PLXS011, 2024). That earlier work already hinted at the melodic electronica and broken beats that now crystallise on this record, confirming the artist’s consistent pursuit of left-field club ideas. Side A opens with “E-Funk”, a hybrid club weapon that fuses elements of 2-step, house and breaks into a single, relentless groove. Its energy makes it a certified floor starter, the kind of track that thrives when the room finds its stride and can be kept in the bag for a timely impact. On the flip side, “Twisty” steps up as the most dancefloor-ready cut, offering solid broken grooves that swirl around acid-tinged bass lines and bleeps, providing a versatile moment for any set that needs a twist of tension and release. Within Scarper’s catalogue, these two tracks reinforce a signature blend of melodic sensibility and rhythmic disruption, extending the artist’s reputation for crafting music that works both in the studio and on the dancefloor. For the contemporary underground, the record offers a concise yet potent statement of where breaks-inflected house can head when paired with a keen ear for club dynamics. DJs will find “E-Funk” useful as a high-impact opener or a surprise insert that can lift a set’s momentum, while “Twisty” serves as a flexible tool for transitioning between deeper grooves and more kinetic moments. Both tracks are cut for vinyl, ensuring the tactile experience and warm playback that many collectors and DJs still prize. The release arrives as a 12-inch vinyl, aligning with HUMAN’s commitment to pressing records without shortcuts. Its straightforward format makes it a practical addition for any crate that values both sound quality and the physical ritual of vinyl.
