About Release
rat – home
Futura Resistenza’s RESLP047 arrives as a 12-inch vinyl that marks the return of the enigmatic Brussels-born project rat. After a cassette debut on the same label, the duo—long-standing collaborators “neither” and “Milius”—repress their debut EP “home” for the first time on vinyl, offering a deeper dive into the experimental terrain they have cultivated since 2024.
Within Futura Resistenza’s 2026 output, “home” follows the earlier releases RESLP044 by Joshua Burkett, RESLP043 “Cold Shoulder”, RESLP042 “Wearing Words”, RESLP029 “Edge Games”, and RESLP035 “3 x hullo, hullo”, while preceding the later tape offerings RESK7009 “Pianostops”, RESK7010 “A Thousand Machines Can't Make a Flower”, and RESK7011 “Intervallo”. This placement underscores the label’s commitment to boundary-pushing sounds, situating rat’s entry among a roster that favours avant-garde textures and unconventional formats.
Side A opens with “01: home”, a title that immediately suggests a return to a personal or spatial centre, and the track’s structure unfolds as a winding passage of fragmented rhythms that feel slightly out of time. The subsequent cuts—“02: rat”, “03: had”, “04: trouble”, “05: stretching”, “06: its”, “07: stiff”, “08: limbs”, “09: in”, “10: the”, “11: tight”, “12: confines”, “13: of”, “14: his”, “15: new”, “16: house”—continue the labyrinthine journey. Each piece contributes a distinct fragment: the early titles introduce glitch-laden motifs, while the middle selections deepen the sense of ritualised circuitry, and the later numbers tighten the atmosphere into a claustrophobic groove that hovers between tension and release. The sequencing creates a narrative arc, moving from the tentative opening toward a more resolved, albeit still unsettled, conclusion on “16: house”.
The record’s overall character is defined by its disjointed rhythms and spectral noise, a sonic language that rat has honed through fifteen years of hidden experimentation. The EP’s texture feels haunted and elusive, with each track offering fleeting moments that resist easy categorisation, reinforcing the experimental genre tag while providing enough rhythmic foundation for a thoughtful set.
In the context of rat’s limited discography, “home” stands as the first official release, translating the duo’s cassette-only origins into a format that invites both collectors and DJs to engage with the material in a tactile way. Its placement among other experimental releases on Futura Resistenza highlights the label’s role as a hub for artists exploring the edges of electronic music in 2026.
For DJs, the record offers a suite of modular sections that can be layered or looped to construct evolving soundscapes. The early tracks work well as intro material, setting an atmospheric tone, while the middle and later cuts provide rhythmic hooks suitable for deeper, more immersive moments in a set. Collectors will appreciate the continuity from the original cassette to this vinyl incarnation, as well as the way the pressing captures the raw, unpolished aesthetic that defines rat’s output.
The release is pressed as a 12-inch vinyl, mirroring the format of its original cassette incarnation and preserving the analog character that complements its experimental ethos.
