About Release

Nicola Cruz – Cryptic Nature EP Nicola Cruz makes his debut on Cabaret Recordings with Cryptic Nature EP, a five-track 12-inch that brings his distinctive approach to electronic rhythm into the label's stripped-back underground environment. Released as CABARET038, the record moves through electro, tech house, rave and acid influences, combining broken rhythms, swung percussion, modular synthesis and tightly controlled four-to-the-floor grooves. Cryptic Nature opens the EP with fractured electro rhythms and cold, futuristic synthesis. The track establishes its identity through broken percussion, atmospheric electronic textures and a deliberately elusive arrangement. Rather than settling into a conventional club groove, Cruz allows the rhythmic structure to remain slightly unstable, creating tension between the programmed beat and the surrounding synthetic detail. Elementals shifts the focus toward a more direct groove. A melodic acid bassline sits beneath swung percussion and crisp rhythmic accents, giving the track a distinctly physical movement. The groove remains minimal and controlled, but the acid line provides enough harmonic motion to keep the arrangement constantly evolving. Newtone specifically highlights the combination of melodic acid bass, minimal structure and swinging rhythm. Kojix brings the EP firmly onto the four-to-the-floor side of the spectrum. Industrial-toned kicks establish a harder rhythmic foundation while clear synthesizer phrases and acid elements introduce a psychedelic edge. The track's strength comes from the balance between mechanical percussion and more expressive electronic detail, producing a sound that is functional enough for the club but sufficiently strange to avoid becoming formulaic. Desire Scan opens the B-side with another variation on Cruz's rhythmic language. Jagged percussion and tightly controlled electronic elements create a more restless groove, maintaining the EP's relationship with rave and electro while retaining its minimal sense of space. The track feels deliberately assembled around individual rhythmic gestures rather than a dense wall of sound. Photosphere closes the record by pushing further into the EP's futuristic atmosphere. Its electronic textures create a more expansive and otherworldly environment while the rhythmic foundation keeps the track connected to the dancefloor. As a closing statement, it brings together the record's central qualities: physical groove, synthetic atmosphere and a fascination with unusual rhythmic detail. Across Cryptic Nature EP, Nicola Cruz avoids treating electro, acid, rave and tech house as separate categories. Instead, he uses their shared rhythmic vocabulary as a starting point for a highly individual production style. Broken beats can give way to four-to-the-floor pressure; acid basslines sit alongside industrial percussion; and futuristic synthesis provides a constant atmospheric layer. The record is also notable within Cruz's wider catalogue because it places his music directly into the contemporary Japanese underground context surrounding Cabaret Recordings. The label, run by DJ Masda and So Inagawa, has developed a catalogue centred on distinctive forms of minimal, techno and house music, making Cruz's detailed and rhythmically unconventional productions a natural fit. Specialist retailers describe Cryptic Nature as a particularly original meeting point between electro, tech house and modern minimal club music. Nicola Cruz has long been associated with a broader interpretation of electronic music that incorporates South American rhythmic ideas alongside contemporary club production. On Cryptic Nature, however, the emphasis is firmly on electronic construction: synthesis, percussion, bass movement and arrangement. The result is less concerned with genre boundaries than with creating grooves that continually shift their character. For DJs, the EP provides five contrasting tools. Cryptic Nature offers broken electro tension, Elementals brings swung acid movement, Kojix delivers the most direct four-to-the-floor pressure, Desire Scan introduces sharper rhythmic complexity, and Photosphere closes with a more spacious and atmospheric approach. Cryptic Nature EP is ultimately a tightly focused record of modern club electronics. Nicola Cruz uses minimal arrangements, detailed synthesis and unconventional rhythmic relationships to create music that feels both functional and exploratory. On CABARET038, electro, acid, rave and tech house become components of a single, highly individual language.
