MLO — Io LP 2x12"

Mlo – Io LP is the latest reissue from Forever Records (catalogue FRVR-3-LP), presented as a 2 × 12-inch vinyl set pressed on black vinyl. The album, originally issued in 1994, sits firmly in the electronica pop territory while drawing on the ambient aesthetics of the mid-90s chill-out movement. Its resurfacing highlights a pivotal moment in UK electronic music, offering a meticulously composed suite of textures that reward deep listening. Within the Forever Records catalogue, Io follows the earlier releases Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia – Ov Biospheres And Sacred Grooves (FRVR-1-LP/LTD) and Fila Brazillia – Old Codes New Chaos (FRVR-2-LP), and precedes the forthcoming Dubtribe Sound System – Selene Songs (FRVR-4-LP/LTD) and Exquisite Corpse – Dream Night Dance Music (FRVR-5-LP). This placement underscores the label’s focus on revisiting landmark ambient and electronic works from the era. Side A opens with “Wimborne”, the album’s opening cut, whose title suggests a quiet, perhaps pastoral landscape that sets the tone for the record’s immersive ambience. The second track, “Noodle #1”, follows, offering a continuation of the tranquil surface while subtly deepening the sonic palette. On side B, “Fast Water” introduces a sense of movement, its title evoking a fluid, shifting current that contrasts with the stillness of the previous side. “Lagoon” then provides a reflective pause, its name conjuring a secluded body of water that mirrors the album’s calm yet layered atmosphere. Side C begins with “Moon Over Lagos”, a title that hints at an exotic nocturnal vista, extending the record’s geographic imagination and sustaining its meditative flow. “Ghost” follows, its spectral implication adding a faint, lingering presence that enriches the surrounding textures. The final side presents the two parts of “In Search Of Lost Time”. Part 1 and Part 2 together form an extended suite that explores the album’s core motifs, inviting listeners to drift through an evolving soundscape that feels both timeless and introspective. Io occupies a distinctive spot in Mlo’s output, revisiting the duo’s collaboration that originally responded to the burgeoning chill-out scene by integrating classical and avant-garde influences. The reissue, the first official one since the original Rising High pressing, aligns with Forever Records’ ongoing series of archival projects that bring overlooked ambient milestones back into circulation. For DJs, the record offers a suite of long-form pieces that work well as atmospheric bridges or background layers in a set, especially in late-night or downtempo contexts. Its expansive tracks lend themselves to subtle mixing, allowing the gradual evolution of motifs to shape the mood without demanding overt rhythmic focus. Collectors will appreciate the gate-fold packaging and the inclusion of a bonus 10-inch disc that houses two previously unreleased versions of “Wimborne”, adding a rare glimpse into the album’s original construction. The release arrives as a 2 × 12-inch vinyl package, housed in a gate-fold sleeve and featuring black vinyl. The limited edition includes a uniquely numbered 10-inch disc with the bonus material, underscoring the tactile and visual appeal of the physical format.
