MAXO KREAM — O.y.n (mc)

Maxo Kream – O.Y.N (MC) arrives on EMPIRE as catalogue ERE1320, a cassette release that marks a pivotal moment for the Houston storyteller. Dropping on 18 September 2026, the project expands his rap repertoire with a blend of gritty street narratives and an emerging global perspective, underscored by a striking Blue Jay coloured vinyl aesthetic noted in the packaging. Within EMPIRE’s recent output, O.Y.N (MC) follows a series of diverse releases that illustrate the label’s breadth. Earlier this year the imprint put out Patchwork Inc. & Michael Damani’s “It’s Just The Rain (Little Rocker / Dub Version)” (ERE1282) and the Wizkid & Asake collaboration “REAL, Vol. 1” (ERE1281), while 2025 saw The Roots’ live double-LP “The Roots Come Alive Too: DYWM30 Live at Blue Note NYC!” (ERE1198) and Pouya’s self-titled LP (ERE1190). Maxo’s cassette therefore sits amid a catalogue that ranges from experimental dub to live jazz-hip-hop, highlighting EMPIRE’s commitment to varied sonic territories. Side A opens with “6 Months Clean”, a concise statement that sets a reflective tone before moving into the title track “O.Y.N”. The latter deepens the introspection, pairing Maxo’s characteristic Texas grit with lyrical threads that hint at his recent personal journey. “30 and Dirty (feat. Denzel Curry)” injects kinetic energy, the feature sharpening the track’s street-level intensity. Closing side A, “This Shit Goin On” sustains the momentum, delivering a hard-hitting flow that bridges the album’s dual moods. Side B begins with “Time Out”, the JPEGMAFIA-produced single highlighted by the label as the emotional centerpiece. Stripped back compared with earlier output, the track offers a resonant drum-driven outro that underscores its themes of love, loss and legacy, echoing Maxo’s recent pilgrimage to Lagos. “Cum Over (feat. Isaiah Falls)” follows, maintaining the contemplative vibe while introducing a collaborative texture. The penultimate cut, “Fake Jeezy (feat. Denzel Curry & JPEGMAFIA)”, is described as an industrial-leaning explosion, marrying sharp lyricism with a surreal, cold aesthetic that pushes Maxo into avant-garde territory. “How I’m Coming (feat. Josh Kream)” returns to a more personal narrative, and the closing “How TF I’m Lucky” caps the cassette with a defiant affirmation of resilience. O.Y.N (MC) occupies a unique space in Maxo Kream’s discography, representing his first overt engagement with his Nigerian heritage after a personal loss. While his earlier projects such as “Punken” and “Personification” cemented his reputation as an independent force, this release deepens his artistic palette, balancing vulnerability with the hard-hitting aggression that has defined his street credibility. For DJs, the cassette offers a versatile toolkit. “30 and Dirty” and “Fake Jeezy” provide high-energy peaks suitable for late-night peaks, while “Time Out” and “How I’m Coming” deliver more introspective moments that can smooth transitions or close a set on a reflective note. Collectors will appreciate the tactile cassette format paired with the distinctive Blue Jay coloured vinyl artwork, a nod to the physicality that complements the album’s thematic depth. The release is presented as a 12-inch cassette, catalogued under EMPIRE’s ERE1320. Its packaging includes front and back cover artwork that mirrors the coloured vinyl motif, reinforcing the visual identity of the project.
