About Release

Jimpster – Soul Spectral EP opens a new chapter for the Freerange imprint, catalogued as FR265R, on 12-inch vinyl. Arriving in the autumn of 2026, this deep house offering arrives as the label celebrates three decades of curating soulful dancefloor music. The EP’s title hints at the spectral depth Jimpster explores, and the inclusion of vocalist Greg Paulus on the lead track adds a human thread to the otherwise instrumental palette. Within Freerange’s 2026 output, Soul Spectral EP follows a series of releases that map the label’s anniversary celebrations. Earlier this year the label issued the Mighty Lover EP (FR321) by Fouk and the Amour LP 20th Anniversary Edition (FRLP17) by Jimpster himself, both reinforcing the label’s commitment to melodic deep house. The EP also arrives after the Bassic Rollers EP (FR315), another Jimpster entry that leaned into rolling basslines, positioning Soul Spectral as a continuation of his evolving sound on the same imprint. Side A opens with “Soul Spectral ft. Greg Paulus”. The collaboration foregrounds a vocal phrase that drifts over a spacious groove, setting a reflective mood that suits both early-night ambience and the transition into more driving moments. The second cut, “Sanguine”, picks up the tempo slightly, offering a richer harmonic texture that maintains the EP’s deep house core while introducing a subtle sense of forward momentum. On the flip side, “Think of You Always” provides a smoother, more melodic contour, its title suggesting a lingering, nostalgic quality that can serve as a peak-time anchor or a late-set wind-down. The record closes with “Soul Spectral (dub) ft. Greg Paulus”, a dub-styled reinterpretation that strips back the vocal to a whisper, emphasizing rhythmic depth and echoing the spectral theme introduced on the opener. For Jimpster, Soul Spectral EP sits alongside his recent Freerange outings such as the North Atlantic EP (FR307, 2025) and the earlier Bassic Rollers EP, marking a continued refinement of his signature deep house aesthetic. The EP’s placement within the label’s anniversary series underscores Freerange’s ongoing dedication to deep, soulful productions that balance emotive melody with dancefloor practicality. From a DJ’s perspective, the record offers two vocal-centric tracks that can be mixed into vocal-heavy sets, while the instrumental “Sanguine” and the dub version provide flexible tools for more stripped-back moments. The sequencing—vocals, then a melodic instrumental, followed by a smooth mid-tempo track and a dub finale—gives the record a natural arc, making it suitable for both peak and closing sections of a set. The release is pressed on 12-inch vinyl, matching the format of Jimpster’s recent Freerange contributions. Its analog presence complements the deep house genre’s tactile nature, inviting collectors to experience the subtle nuances of the mix directly from the needle.
