About Release
Halfgeleider, Electric Bear – Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition, catalogued as KM03 on De Kabelmaatschappij, brings together two Belgian practitioners of hardware-driven electronic music for a nine-track 12-inch split release built around modular synthesis, intricate rhythm programming and exploratory sound design. Rather than presenting a conventional genre exercise, the record documents two distinct approaches to machine-made music: Halfgeleider's carefully sculpted, voltage-controlled environments alongside Electric Bear's more rhythmically fragmented and experimental electronic language.
The pairing makes sense precisely because the two artists approach hardware from different directions. Halfgeleider, the alias of Belgian producer Maarten Voeten, has developed a body of work centred on Eurorack modular synthesis, with a process that emphasises patching, live interaction and the unpredictable behaviour of analogue systems. His previous Polyfields LP on De Kabelmaatschappij was likewise created entirely around a Eurorack modular system, combining intricate compositions with a strong sense of atmosphere and electronic abstraction.
On Juxtaposition, Halfgeleider occupies the opening four tracks, beginning with “Thecircadianlow.” The title alone suggests the record's interest in cycles, repetition and subtle shifts rather than conventional verse-and-chorus development. The tracklist continues through “Toshibatransfer,” “Embers” and “Arches,” forming a sequence that places texture and evolving electronic detail ahead of obvious genre signifiers.
This is familiar territory for Halfgeleider. His earlier work has been explicitly rooted in Eurorack modular synthesis, with recordings often performed in extended takes and shaped through hands-on patching rather than conventional MIDI-based production. On Onder/stroom, for example, the majority of the recordings were made in one take on a modular system, with editing deliberately restricted to the drums. That working method gives his music a physical quality: patterns feel discovered through interaction with the machine rather than simply programmed into it.
The second half of Juxtaposition belongs to Electric Bear, whose catalogue similarly sits around electronic, ambient, electro, electronica and IDM. Previous releases such as 25-4C, MooDS and DN4:22 establish an interest in abstract electronic construction, while the project's Belgian identity places it within the same wider experimental hardware culture as Halfgeleider.
Electric Bear's contribution opens with “2: ndchoice,” followed by “Synsolo,” “78:”, “Subtleturbine” and “Manualoverride.” The naming itself suggests a machine-oriented aesthetic: abbreviated, technical and deliberately impersonal. Where Halfgeleider's side leans towards slowly evolving electronic environments, Electric Bear's sequence places greater emphasis on rhythmic interaction, fragmented patterns and the behaviour of individual electronic components.
The result is less a competition between two producers than a study in contrast. Juxtaposition is structured so that the listener can hear two related but clearly differentiated approaches to modular and hardware-based composition. Halfgeleider's work has a strong emphasis on atmosphere, evolving timbre and detailed sonic construction; Electric Bear introduces a more rhythmically active vocabulary, creating a sharper sense of movement between individual events.
That distinction is the record's central strength. The split format gives KM03 a narrative that a conventional album by one artist might not possess. Instead of maintaining a single sonic palette throughout, the record changes perspective halfway through, allowing texture, rhythm and synthesis to be heard from another angle.
For listeners coming from the IDM and braindance spectrum, the appeal is obvious, but Juxtaposition is broader than those genre tags suggest. The music is grounded in modular synthesis without becoming a demonstration of equipment for its own sake. Machines are treated as compositional instruments, with sequencing, modulation, repetition and controlled instability forming the actual musical language.
The release also continues the relationship between Halfgeleider and De Kabelmaatschappij. His Polyfields LP was the label's KM01, while Juxtaposition arrives as KM03, positioning the new split within an emerging catalogue dedicated to experimental electronic music and hardware-oriented production.
For DJs and collectors, Halfgeleider, Electric Bear – Juxtaposition sits firmly on the more exploratory side of electronic music. This is a record for sets where atmosphere, texture and unusual rhythmic structures matter as much as conventional dancefloor impact — and for listeners interested in the continuing possibilities of modular synthesis beyond predictable techno formulas.
As KM03, Juxtaposition captures two Belgian electronic artists working with similar tools but different instincts. Halfgeleider explores the spatial and textural possibilities of controlled voltage; Electric Bear pushes further into rhythm, fragmentation and machine logic. Together, the two sides make a compelling case for hardware electronics as an evolving musical language rather than a fixed genre.
