GUY FROM DOWNSTAIRS — Layers Only

Guy From Downstairs – Layers Only appears on Pleasure Zone as catalogue PLZ047G, a 12-inch vinyl issued in a striking green colour. The record arrives in the midst of the label’s 2026 output, following the Evolution EP (PLZ045B) and the earlier Discordination EPs (PLZ037 and PLZ037Y) while preceding the label’s upcoming releases. Minimal techno serves as the unifying terrain, and the EP marks the producer’s return after a five-year hiatus, promising a fresh perspective on the subtle, hypnotic grooves that define his output. Within Pleasure Zone’s recent chronology, Layers Only slots between the Evolution EP by Mihai Popoviciu & David Delgado (catalog PLZ045B) and the earlier Discordination EPs by Johnny D (catalogues PLZ037 and PLZ037Y). Both the Evolution and Discordination outings have explored kinetic minimalism, setting a context for Guy From Downstairs to re-enter the roster with a record that balances the label’s penchant for precise sequencing and nuanced texture. Side A opens with “Don’t Change”, a track that sustains a steady pulse while subtly shifting its tonal focus, creating a space that invites gradual layering in a DJ set. The second cut, “16 22 feat Direkt”, builds on that foundation, introducing a slightly more insistent rhythm that pushes the momentum forward without breaking the record’s overall restraint. Turning the disc, “Dream Untitled” on side B offers a reflective dip, its ambience acting as a bridge between the more propulsive A-side cuts and the concluding piece. The final track, “Perfect Endlessness”, extends the mood into a lingering groove, its repetitive structure ideal for late-night transitions where the floor seeks a sustained, evolving energy. For Guy From Downstairs, Layers Only follows a prolific 2026 year that already saw the release of 50/50 on his own imprint, the sonorous LP L’odeur des reves on VRNT, and the Vovisme EP on Pleasure Zone back in 2020. This EP continues his exploration of minimal forms, yet the green vinyl presentation adds a visual cue that mirrors the record’s subtle yet distinct character within his catalogue. In the broader underground scene, the EP contributes to the ongoing dialogue between minimal techno’s restrained aesthetics and the desire for nuanced progression on the dancefloor. Its placement among Pleasure Zone’s recent offerings underscores the label’s commitment to curating releases that reward attentive listening while remaining functional for club environments. DJs will find “Don’t Change” and “16 22 feat Direkt” useful for building early set momentum, their steady drives allowing seamless mixing into deeper selections. “Dream Untitled” serves as a palate cleanser or a transitional mood piece, while “Perfect Endlessness” works as a closing statement or a late-hour groove, its looping nature supporting extended improvisation. The record is pressed as a 12-inch vinyl in a vivid green hue, aligning the tactile experience with the music’s understated vibrancy. Its format invites both collectors and DJs to engage with the physical medium, offering a distinctive visual element without relying on limited-edition claims.
